Two famous Italian painters were born near Vicchio: Giotto and Fra Angelico.
In the historical centre of Vicchio not to be missed are the Palazzo del Podesta (today the town hall) and Piazza Giotto, with a monument to the famous artist, desired by the poet Giosue Carducci.
Not far away is the house where Benvenuto Celini, Master Goldsmith lived from 1559 until 1571, while some of the ancient town walls can been seen at the Torre dei Cerchiai and the old town gate.
At Vespignano, can be visited the house where Giotto was born, now a museum dedicated to him, and a short distance away, il Ponte di Cimabue, a bridge over the Ensa where legend has it that the Maestro Cimabue discovered the young Giotto’s painting ability. Further afield is the Villa di Casole, formerly seat of the Ubaldini family and the Villa di Campestri where Saint Anthony stayed in 1147.
Crossing over the characteristic bridge at Ponte a Vicchio, a short drive away is the Church of Barbiana where Don Lorenzo Milani lived and taught in his famous school.
