Florence, Palazzo Pitti, Museo degli Argenti
From 15-05-2008 to 11-01-2009
The exhibition "Medici and Sciences" will focus on the prominent role that the physical and mathematical disciplines played in the Tuscan history.
In particular from Cosimo I until Ferdinand II, the Medici were great patrons of both manufacturers of tools, both natural philosophers because, they realize more than any other European ruler, that the scientific knowledge and technological control of nature gave strength and prestige to political power. For this reason, besides the rich collections of paintings, sculptures and jewellery, Medici formed a collection of mathematical tools. This close relationship between art and science emerge by the beauty and preciousness of many of these instruments, often unique and authentic works of art themselves. "Medici and Sciences" will highlight the connection between art, science and political power by combining a wide selection of instruments of the Institute and Museum of History of Science, Florence, extensive selection of paintings, printed works and manuscripts from the Polo Museum and other Florentine and Italian institutions and libraries.
