Anghiari

Anghiari is a lovely medieval town lying between two rivers, the Tiber and the Arno in the Province of Arezzo. It has 5,847 inhabitants.

The powerful 13th century walls made the town an invincible fortress and kept the Tuscan flag flying during the many historical events that occurred in this delicately balanced border area.

The countryside around Anghiari has an untouched atmosphere with ancient woods dotted with monasteries and archaeological sites. Artisan shops and the workrooms of furniture and antiques restorers enrich the small squares of the town; its towers and churches are embellished with masterpieces of painting and sculpture and there are breathtaking views to be found from every corner of the ancient town.

The town is famous for the Battle of Anghiari between Florence and Milan which took place on June 14, 1441. The battle inspired a fresco in the Palazzo Vecchio by Leonardo da Vinci. The fresco has since gone missing although a sketch of it by Peter Paul Rubens is still in existence. "The Battle of Anghiari" is a lost painting by Leonardo da Vinci, which is still believed to be hidden somewhere in the Council Hall in Florence. It is believed to depict a fierce battle between two men ensconced on raging horses.
