
Shopping in Tuscany can be a unique experience, especially markets with antiques, collector’s items and modern antiques. The biggest and better known markets are in Arezzo, Florence, Lucca and Pisa and here is the list of the most important Tuscany markets:
Florence
Various markets of the antique dealing are carried out monthly. Florence has its antique market on the last Sunday of every month in Piazza dei Ciompi. It can be found of all: furniture, sculptures, marbles, but also clocks, jewels, plates and glasses. Florence’s central market is the Mercato Centrale. It is housed in two floors building, built in 1874 by Giuseppe Mengoni. It is Florence’s busiest food market, selling meat, fish, cheese and typical Tuscany food on the ground floor, and vegetables, fruit and flowers on the top floor. Mercato Nuovo or New Market sells leather goods and souvenirs. It was originally built in 1547 as a central market for silk and other luxury goods. For the flower lovers can be interesting small Mercato delle Piante, selling herbs and ornamental plants.
Arezzo
Arezzo has an enormous antiques market on the first Sunday of the month and the previous Saturday, centered on Piazza Grande and Piazza Vasari, in the historical center of the city. This antique fair was born in 1968, for initiative of the antiquarian and collector Ivan Bruschi and in the 1968 the present antiquarians, were not more than fifteen. Today, there are more than the 500 exhibitors coming from every part of the country and it is most attended antiques market of Italy. In average the visitors are approximately 20.000 every month. It can be found of all: furniture, paintings, books and ancient press, clocks, glasses, cloth, iron and the most varied curiosity between. The hunting to the valuable object, to the "piece" lacking a precious collection, already begins during the previous evening the opening of the market, when the goods still is packed on the trucks and it is closed, often after ignited dealings, to the sunset of Sunday. Thanks to the market, today in Arezzo are available beyond 100 stores of antique dealing. To Arezzo the offer is much varied and such one to satisfy collectors and amateurs of art between the more demanding.
Lucca
Lucca has a large antiques market centered on Piazza San Giusto and Piazza Antelminelli on the third Sunday and previous Saturday of every month where furniture, sculptures, marbles, can be found, but also clocks, jewels and costume jeweler.
Pisa
The market of Pisa, near the Loggia of the Benches, is hold every Saturday and following Sunday. The market of the antique dealing is kept on the Ponte di Mezzo on the second weekend of each month. It can be found: furniture, lamps, plates and trays in silver, jewels and costume jewellery.
Siena
Piazza del Mercato, every the third Sunday of the month keeps the market of the collectors where coins, stamps, several medals and curiosities can be found above all. Siena is famous for its Christmas Market with a special pottery fair. The Market runs the entire month of December until the first week of January. The Christmas Market takes place on the Piazza Matteotti, selling pottery, local sweets, fruit, toys, books, terracotta, glass, wood, wrought iron, fashion accessories and leather goods. On December 13th, there is the Festival of Santa Lucia and after church services, the streets are filling up with ceramic vendors.
Livorno
Every the first Saturday and Sunday of the month keeps the market of the antique dealing near the Venice quarter: here furniture, lamps, plates and trays in silver, clocks and jewels can be found. Piazza XX Settembre is lying near Fortezza Nuova and it’s named "American Market". The market name derives from the large amounts of American army surplus sold here after World War II.
Prato
Historical center, Buonamici square: fourth Sunday. Carmignano - historical centre: first Sunday. Poggio a Caiano - via Garibaldi: fourth Sunday and previous Saturday, excluding July, August and September.
Grosseto
Orbetello - corso Italia: first Sunday and previous Saturday. Marina di Grosseto – historical centre: third Sunday and previous Saturday.
