The Museum of Pietra Serena or museum of famous "Firenzuola stone" is situated in small town of Firenzuola, 45 minute driving from Florence. The museum is housed inside of the Rocca di Firenzuola, fortification of medieval origin, in the town founded in the 1332 by Republic of Florence.
The exhibits illustrate the relation between various aspects of quarrying, the art of the stonemason and the local area. Through documents, pictures and materials, including equipment and tools used by stonemason, the museum traces the history of an ancient craft activity that is an important part of this beautiful small town.
Drawing on personal memories, the museum builds up an interesting picture of the domestic and working lives of the local population and the hard work that was involved. Part of the museum offer the work of the master stonemasons, revealing the full extent of their artistic and technical skills, and the patience with which they transformed stone into statues, water stoups, tabernacles and relief’s.
