Lucca is situated at the banks of the river Serchio and you simply follow the river upstream to find yourself in the beautiful nature of Garfagnana. This region is the place to be for lovers of walking, but to travel from Lucca its better first to take the train or bus to Castelnuovo or Corfino.
From here on, you can make short or long walks in the outskirts of the Apuan Alps. The landscape hasn't changed much since prehistoric times although one can find the work of mankind back in the villages and landmarks, but almost in an archaic way. That's probably why you feel so out of (our) time and everything has such a smell of poetry.
Here we find the villages of Borgo a Mazzano, Castelvecchio Pascoli and Barga
- In Borgo a Mazzano we find a bridge, locally famous because of the legend connected to it, the Ponte della Maddelena. The builder having problems finishing the bridge (and seeing it you can imagine) asked the devil for his help. The devil agreed with the condition, that the first soul passing the bridge would be his. He agreed and the bridge was finished, but the builder took care that the first one to cross the bridge was a dog and so the bridge got the name ?Ponte del diavolo? or Devil?s Bridge.
- Castelvecchio Pascoli is well known in Italy because of his former inhabitant Giovanni Pascoli, a classically schooled poet. Barga with its cathedral is a typical exponent of a town in the middle Ages.

Further worth mentioning is visiting the Grotta del Vento or translated "the Windy Cave".
