The Tuscan Archipelago, Tuscany Travel Guide

This is the name of the largest marine park in Europe, extending from the Island of Gorgona, on a parallel with the city of Livorno to the Island of Giannutri, to the south of the Argentario peninsula.

An ideal place to be during the bird migrating season, the islands have geological characteristic which make each one different from the other. The area is perfumed by its Mediterranean underbrush, and wild flowers and aromatic herbs around.

The Island of Elba

Certainly the largest and also the most affected by man due to the iron mines and granite caves which attracted the first inhabitants, even the island only became well known with the arrival of the Etruscans. Only 10 kilometers from Piombino, Elba is 220 square kilometers in length and by size, the third largest island in Italy.

As it is relatively small, it is easy to visit in its entirety beginning in Portoferrario where the ferries dock, passing through the small towns spread out along the coast line, which alternate with almost deserted beaches and coves, and then on into its hilly interior with paths leading through the countryside enabling the visitor to experience nature in its original state.

The entire island is scattered with fortresses to defend the ports against invasions by outsiders who were numerous over the centuries. In 1814-15 Napoleon Bonaparte was exiled here and, during his short stay, had roads and fortifications built to his specifications and restructured the mining activities. Both his residences are only a few kilometers apart and can be visited.

The town of Rio Marina, with its characteristic houses typical of the mining community, hosts the Elbano Mineral Museum. Other towns include Porto Azurro, well known beach resort; the medieval Capoliveri; Marina di Campo which overlooks a spectacular half-moon shaped bay and Marciana with its Marina. Ferries depart from Piombino on the mainland on an hourly basis in the summer.

Island of Giglio

Island of Giglio - high and rugged coastlines alternate with sandy beaches. The climate is mild and dry, ideal for growing grapes to make "Ansonica" wine, which was first produced in Roman times. The medieval town of Giglio Castello is surrounded by a wall and towers which defended the town centre from potential invaders. Ferries leave for Giglio from Porto Santo Stefano on the mainland several times a day.

Island of Gorgona

Island of Gorgona is the southern island in the archipelago. It is small, wild and mountainous. The island previously housed a prison in addition to monasteries and refuges for hermits. The flora and fauna enjoy an ideal environment.

Island of Montecristo

Island of Montecristo, the furthest away from the mainland and the least accessible of the islands in the archipelago. The whole island is a nature reserve sanctioned by numerous restrictions to preserve the natural habitat.

Island of Pianosa

The island of Pianosa is entirely made up of farmed plains extending up to maximum height of 27 meters. The coast is rugged, irregular and difficult to access.

Island of Capraia

Island of Capraia is primarily rocky with a coastline that dips sharply down into the sea. It is about 20 square kilometers in size and was named by the Romans for the many wild goats which live there. The surrounding sea abounds in fish.

Island of Giannutri

Island of Giannutri - immersed in a clear and crystalline sea. In addition to being a private island, it is a nature reserve and has no tourist facilities.
