Museo del Tessuto, located on Piazza del Commune, which tells the history of textile manufacturing in Prato through a collection of 5000 pieces of cloth, several of which are exquisitely made.
Entirely dedicated to the art of textile manufacturing, the Prato Museum of Textiles houses collection of fabrics that is of great interest in terms of quality and the range of items on display.
Set up in 1975 following a major donation by the collector Loriano Bertini, the museum has grown rapidly over the years thanks to public and private contributions.
There are now over 5000 samples of fabrics from around the world, dating from 5th century AD through to the present day. The museum includes collections of ancient fabric made according to various techniques, and designed for religious purposes of for the home. Besides the cloth samples, the museum also houses various kinds of Italian textile machines and tools, including devices developed to meet the requirements of local production. There are also exhibits about the history of chemical dyeing in the period from the end of the 19th century to the middle of the 20 century.
