Certainly the most impressive building in Florence is its cathedral. Florence Cathedral, immediately visible in its admirable lines from the hills surrounding the city, was started by Arnolfo di Cambio on 8th of September 1296. The realization of the building required almost a century and a half; the initial project of the architect was drastically different from the definitive structure of the church. The sections of the cathedral are a roll call of notable Italian artists. The dome was designed by Brunelleschi, the bell tower by Giotto, and the baptistery doors by Ghiberti. The cathedral, dedicated to Santa Maria del Fiore in tribute to the city of Florence, was consecrated on March 25th 1436. The evident variety of style expressed in the diverse sections of the cathedral underline the mutations of the artistic movements that existed along the 140 years necessary to complete the various phases of the construction. In a nearby museum, you can see the original panels of Ghiberti's famous baptistery doors. Giotto's Tower, if you are willing to climb its 400 steps, offers a beautiful view of the city.
