The Maremma, Tuscany Travel Guide

Categories

The Maremma is an area in Italy, part of southern Tuscany. Provided with significant natural and environmental resources, Maremma is today one of the best tourist destinations in Italy where ancient traditions have survived and Tuscan culture is preserved. It is being promoted as a destination for agritourism. The ancient Romans were the first to cultivate the marshes of the Maremma, but after the collapse of their empire the area went virtually uninhabited until the 18th century. The land has since been reclaimed, the irrigation canals unblocked and farming developed on the fertile soil.

The Parco Naturale dell Uccellina

The Parco Naturale dell Uccellina was set up in 1975 to protect the abundant local flora and fauna and prevent more development taking place. The Maremma nature park incudes the Mountains of Uccellina, one of the few landscapes along the coast which have remained in their original state. At the heart of the reserve are a series of hills rising from the plains of Grosseto. The area encloses an infinite number of beaches and coves, coastal marshes, forests and typical Mediterranean forest. Even the most unobservant visitor cannot fail to encounter the abundant wildlife which roams freely in the pinewoods such as deer, badgers, wolves and wild boars, which can be dangerous.

Maremma horses are famous and are truly impressive when ridden by "buttei", local cowhands, wearing traditional dress. The latter are particularly picturesque during local festivals as they symbolize the traditional spirit and soul of the Maremma. The flora in the park is also unique; many cork producing oak trees as well as enormous expanses of rosemary which perfume the air and are exceptional sight when they are all in flower.

Many rare species are also to be found.

There are seven paths to choose from to please trekkers, nature lovers and birdwatchers alike.

Abbazia di San Rabano

The ruined Cistercian abbey, built in the 12th century, stands close to the park’s highest peak, Poggio Lecci. The tower and fortifications date back to the 14th century, the time of the fierce battles between Pisa and Siena.
