Michelangelo Buonarotti was born in Florence in 1475 and died there in 1564. He is one of the greatest artists in the history of the world. In 1501, the City of Florence commissioned Michelangelo to create a statue to be placed high above Florence on one of the Cathedral fortresses. Michelangelo produced "David" at the age of 26. The City of Florence deemed "David" a civic patriotic symbol and placed it in front of the Palazzo Vecchio. Michelangelo's masterpiece David is housed in the Galleria dell'Accademia. The Galleria dell'Accademia is also home to another remarkable work by Michelangelo, the unfinished piece entitled 'Slaves', and there are large picture galleries as well as other works of sculpture to be seen.
