Grotta del Vento, Tuscany Travel Guide

Situated in the centre of the Apuan Alps Natural Park, Wind Cave is one of the most compete of European caves, presenting an extraordinary variety of phenomena which are outlined with competence and precision by expert speleological guides.

There are three itineraries

  • The first (one hour) - proceeds horizontally and is characterized throughout by splendid calcareous formations.
  • The second (two hours) - which also includes the first, visit a small underground river and fascinating wide chambers.
  • The third (three hours) - offers a complete tour of the cave where easy pathways climb up several perfectly vertical tracts. The cave is open every day (on weekdays) of the year, between November 2nd and March 31st is possible to visit only the first itinerary.

The internal cave temperature is 10.7°C.

Bar facilities can be found next to the ticket office, as well as a gift shop with a large selection of minerals and fossils. Wind Cave - The name derives from the violent air current which runs through the cave, due to the presence of two openings which are situated at different levels.

The first reference of the Wind Cave dates back to the 17th Century.

The first real expedition took place in 1932, when several speleologists from Florence advanced 70 meters.

The decisive expedition, in terms of tourist value, was undertaken by the "Lucca Speleological Group" in 1964, which explored 1110 meters of galleries.

Today, more than 4 km of tunnels have been explored, and there still remain at least 30 unexplored branches.
